Individuals from Diverse Backgrounds

I am a specialist in the treatment of eating disorders across the spectrum of disturbance. When necessary, I work within a treatment team model in order to address the complexity of the eating disorder and its impact on the individual whose physical, familial, and social health and well-being are also relevant to one’s psychological development.

In other cases, with individuals who are more physically stable, I primarily engage in individual treatment to address the eating disorder. This process involves investigating the dynamic underpinnings of the eating disorder, overcoming resistances or other ingrained ways of being (e.g. “bad habits”), working through psychological conflicts, uncovering the meaning of the symptoms and the ways in which the symptoms “speak,” acquiring language for the expression of emotions and improving one’s ability to tolerate emotion, developing a core sense of self, cultivating consciousness, reflectivity, and self-knowledge, working through trauma and relational binds (i.e. the ways in which relationships in our lives have gotten us “stuck” in one way or another), realizing true power and control instead of relying on the eating disorder to feel empowered, cultivating more effective coping mechanisms, and striving towards daily symptom reduction and relief.

I have a deep interest in working with individuals who are striving to improve their relationships—both with themselves and with others. I have become very interested in working with women, men, and couples who are going through life changes and transitions—especially dealing with the challenges of becoming pregnant, unexpected and complex emotional responses that arise during pregnancy that may relate to past or present day relationship issues, preparation for the amazing and empowering experience of labor/childbirth, and the exploratory work often required for new parents as they negotiate the myriad of parental choices they will make together, and finally the struggle to juggle the demands of life-home and career, as new parents. As an extension of this work, parenting and marital therapy, is also of particular interest to me.
